Parking Enforcement Aides, commonly referred to as Police Aides, monitor parking conditions at 20 Village public parking fields, 5 Railroad parking fields, the Garden City Community Park parking field, the St. Paul's School parking field, and the Library parking field. Duties at these fields include enforcement of handicap spaces, timed spaces, permit parking, no parking zones, and other violations of Village and State parking laws. In addition, the Police Aides monitor over 20 private parking fields and 13 private and public school fields for handicap and fire zone violations.
Police Aides assist the Patrol Force in answering calls for police assistance such as but not limited to traffic accidents, crime scene security, fire calls, dangerous conditions, disabled autos, and keys locked in autos.
Police Aides patrol the Village area for Village Code violations which include, but are not limited to: animal, noise, commercial, sign, rubbish, sprinkler, parks, and zoning ordinances. Police Aides issue appearance tickets as a follow-up to Police investigations where it was determined that a violation of the Village Code was committed, but a ticket was not able to be issued at the time of occurrence (ie: false alarms and sprinkler violations).
Police Aides are assigned to traffic posts for parades, fairs, sporting events, demonstrations, or other special events that require traffic control. The Police Aides are also utilized by the Patrol Force, when warranted, to assist in traffic control for auto accidents, traffic signal light malfunctions, railroad gate malfunctions, fire calls, and any other incident that requires additional traffic control.
Police Aides are assigned to School Traffic Crossings during the regular and summer school sessions. They are also assigned to special night traffic for parent/teacher conferences, school dances, and other school functions.
The Police Aides are responsible for maintaining police equipment such as fire extinguishers and oxygen bottles. They are also responsible for transporting police vehicles to and from the Village Yard for servicing and maintenance.
Police Aides are assigned to the Garden City Justice Court when it is in session. Duties include: giving directions, crowd management, and assisting the Judge or Court Personnel as needed.
